Great tips….whether you are looking out for job opportunities actively or simply just updating your resume/ skills.
You witnessed your colleagues receiving phone calls for interviews without applying for jobs, head hunters hunting them down and job offers appear from nowhere. And you were wondering, “How did that happened? Why didn’t I have that same experience too? Is there something I did not do to put myself in that position?” You are probably right if you answer “yes” to the third question.
Every professional would have developed some talent or garner some skills and knowledge after a few years of experience. But, the big question mark is, “How I do I get others to discover my talent?”
Check the seven ways below.
1. Excel in your job – it’s no secret. If you are good in what you do - your peers, bosses and clients know it. Especially clients –impress them with your talent and good attitude, you have your bosses worried about losing a great asset.
2. Send your resumes to Head-Hunters and build rapport with them – so that when an opportunity arises, you are the first candidate they think of. If you hide your talents, it’s not going to benefit you in the long run.
3. Networking – have you been attending functions, events and key industry conferences to exchange business cards and engage in intelligent conversations with like-minded people? There are always opportunities to talk about what you do – seize this time to sell yourself.
4. Register with an online job portal – select not only those that allow you to apply jobs but opportunity for your public profiles to be searchable by potential employers. In Allyhunt, we publish public profiles – make use of this feature by updating your skills page so that employers can search out your talent easily via the Resume Access Module. Skills include technical as well as soft skills. If you have developed SOPs for a maintenance department, do not be afraid to mention it. Do not be shy to flaunt your long list of skills.
5. Register with social networking sites – the internet now has never before been more beneficial to people like you and me. With Facebook, LinkedIn and what not, it gives you the opportunity to be connected not only with friends but their friends and associates. In LinkedIn, it was said professionals got referrals double the times more than anywhere else. Just make sure you know how to manage the profile that you are publishing. Again, be precise with what you are good at. If need professional help to make your talent stand out, do it.
6. Blogging – not about personal stuff. Rather, create a blog that talk about specific area of expertise. It’s a great opportunity to display your knowledge and proficiency within your niche industry. It will definitely increase your credibility and build your reputation. Some examples of such blogs that you can follow and get a glimpse of how its being done:-
If you do not have the time or passion to blog, you can participate in the blogosphere by commenting on other blogs and making comments in forums and etc. That’s how you stamped your authority.
7. Join relevant industry associations and groups – and not just become a passive member. Most groups have seminars and functions, take active part in them and again, take this opportunity to mingle and network.
Finally, this topic is not complete without touching on personal branding. The phrase “personal branding” is not about having a tag line or logo although it’s an advantage if you have that in place. However, it’s more about developing a sense of what and how you want to present yourself to potential employers.
The message must also be consistent, increasing again, your credibility. Now, with the rise of online social networking sites and job sites such as Allyhunt, promoting your talent has never been easier and more convenient. So, do not be afraid to dabble with them.
And you do not have to wait until you accumulate enough work experience to follow these tips. You can begin almost immediately, even now with your first entry-level job and guess what, you will soon watch your career growing from strength to strength.
Good luck!
