Emotional Intelligence: Do I need it? Do I have it?

What is actually emotional intelligence? Do you mean “intelligent emotionally”? Well, to a certain extent, you can interpret it that way. When Daniel Goleman first published his book on this subject in 1995, it became a buzzword in the corporate world. Before this, people associated intelligence with cognitive ability such as the ability to solve problems and memorize complex issues. For many years, the social or non-intellective aspects of a person had been ignored but now more people are beginning to recognize the need for or lack of “people” skills.

Do you believe that Emotional Quotient(EQ) is more important than IQ in the work place?

You can disagree with me but it seems our ability to interact with people is becoming one of the important requirements in almost every job. If you don’t believe me, read the job postings that our clients have posted here. More than 90% of the postings would have the following as their requirements:- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills; Must have the ability to deal with all levels of people; Must be able to work under pressure and capable of handling highly stressful situations. Funny it may seem, but I have yet to come across any advertisement that states, “Must possess a high IQ, with at least a score of 100 and above.” So, you have it, whether you like it or not, you need to have some emotional intelligence if you want to succeed in your career.

But what if I really don’t think I am doing well in this department? Can I learn or be trained to have a higher EQ? We know a higher IQ is something that we cannot hope to acquire even if we want to. It was reported that one’s IQ is pretty stable in an adult life. So, does that mean I am a hopeless case if I have a low EQ?

If you are a recruiter or employer, what do you value most in a potential hire – IQ or EQ?

Well, I don’t have all the answers here. I believe there are a lot of well-informed people out there who could enlighten us. If you think your thoughts are going to help, please feel free to share them with us.
