There was a noticeable scratch on the office staircase that leads to the first floor. My boss passed by and the scratch unfortunately did not escape his sharp eyes. It sounded like a roar when he opened his mouth,
“What is this on MY staircase? I want this scratch to be gone by the end of the day. Understand?”
I was right behind him and obviously, the message was for me. If this sounds unfamiliar to some, perhaps you are one of the lucky few who are spared of having to work with what I call “unreasonable” bosses. Some of us are not so lucky though (and no, this did not happen in Allyhunt’s office but a true story nonetheless). And the same boss once said this and I always think it’s so hilarious,
“Ok, I can see that it’s the rainy season, but I don’t care - the whole KL can be flooded, but you MAKE SURE that MY office is not flooded!”
Wow, since when have I switched role with God? Was my boss wanting too much? These stories are real and those words have stuck in my mind ever since, even though these incidents took place many years ago.
I heard this story from my friend. She has been working in this company for more than three years and she is not the type who has a string of habitual lateness or MCs. One day, she called her boss and told him that she needed to take MC but her sickness was rather embarrassing (since her name is not mentioned here, perhaps I can just reveal it, its UTI - urinary tract infection). Thus, she subtly omitted that little fact when she called up her male boss.
When she reported to work the next day, her colleague told her that her boss was not convinced that she was genuinely sick because she did not sound sick at all on the phone. Of course, my friend was furious. Should she confront her boss and give him a piece of her mind? Or should she just shut up and act as though nothing has happened, although it did happen and it has stayed in her mind ever since?
I believe we are not alone. If you have a similar experience, please share it with us so that we would be comforted to know there are other “victims” just like us out there too. And yes, we would be even more comforted if you have a worse tale than ours (just joking!). Or better still, you have finally found a secret formula in dealing with bosses like that - your success stories will definitely help people like me and my friend!
Or do you think these bosses are actually not wanting too much? There are reasons to justify such actions. I really don’t think so but then, you may be able to convince me.
Come on guys, put your thinking caps on! I would love to have your comments!
