Oh! I forgot!

“Hello, Devi. Good morning! Aren’t you supposed to report to work this morning?”

After waiting for almost a whole hour in the morning, Amy was trying to control her slight irritation when she made the call.

“Oh! I forgot. Actually, I have an interview at 11 am and another at 3 pm today. I really don’t think I can come in to do the temp job at your office. I tell ya what, I can come in to do the job tomorrow”, Devi quickly replied.

Left with not much choice, Amy reluctantly agreed and asked Devi to call her should she be offered a permanent job for any of the two interviews. Devi cheerfully promised she would call. The day went by… Devi did not call and… it was the next day.

At 10am, Devi did not show up. Amy made the call. Casually and unapologetically, Devi mentioned that she has overlooked the appointment because she had to attend another interview that morning. When confronted on why she did not call to inform earlier, the answer was, “Oh, I forgot!” again.

“Oh, I forgot”, a familiar phrase indeed but usually used in situations whereby a promise was not kept. Of course, you will rarely hear “Oh, I forgot” when one misses lunch or his/her favorite football match. “Oh, I forgot” tells me this person does not mean what he/she says, that whatever we had agreed on earlier was definitely not on the “top” list. Too bad, this matter is just not that important to warrant me to put it down in my diary.

Recruiters usually encounter a lot of “Oh, I forgot” stories. For example, forgetting to bring the certificates for interviews, forgetting the starting date of the most recent employment, forgetting the salary of previous employment, etc… “You must be kidding me. This can’t be serious.” Unfortunately, it is. Join the recruitment industry for a year and you will understand what I mean. If you are a serious jobseeker, it’s a “disease” that you should stay away from.

Who has any other “Oh, I forgot!” stories to tell?
