Part time jobs are very popular in Malaysia especially among students. Besides having some extra pocket money, they allow students the opportunity to have a foretaste of what it means to be employed. When I was a student or to be exact, during my “Form Six” (A levels), I used to work as a part-time t-shirt Sales Assistant. I was able to earn about RM80 a week. That’s a lot of money during that time. But more importantly, the experience that I gained was immeasurable.
So, if you are a student reading this, grab a part-time job soon for the sake of the experience. Besides, it gives you some mileage when you apply for a full-time employment later.
And the benefits keep rolling…
Under the Part-Time Work Regulations 2010 which took effect from Oct 1, 2010, part-time workers will be defined as those who work between 30 per cent and 70 per cent from the normal working hours of full-time workers. The Human Resource Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said under the new regulations, the part-time workers would also be eligible to enjoy certain incentives in terms of protection and rights including public holidays, annual leave, medical leave, off days and over-time allowance.
Now, the definition of part-time worker is important for part-time workers are different from those that work from home or the freelancer or those under a tele-working system or even casual workers (that work less than 30 per cent of the normal working hours).
