Simple Truths About Resume Writing

Resume

Truth #1 Write with the position applied in mind

Resume writing is about writing toward your next job. To best illustrate this concept is to take an example of a sales executive that is applying for a sales manager position. To write toward his new career goal, the executive needs to place a greater emphasis on activities such as sales recruitment, sales training, sales budgeting and etc. These items in combination with his sales achievements will give him a better position as an individual who is already well-qualified for his targeted management position.

Truth #2 Know Who You Are and What You Want

Know your objective. Know the type of position you’re interested in. Know the industry that you wish to work. With this self-awareness, you are able to convey accurately in your resume your uniqueness and value to an employer.

Truth #3 Selling is key

Don’t be surprised that resume writing is essentially about sales and marketing. The product is you! You got to craft out a plan that is able to market yourself to those employers that demand the kind of skills, experience and qualification that only you can offer. Think direct-mail advertising. You want employers attention to be captured at the very first glance.

Truth #4 Results speaks

It’s usual to see a list of responsibilities stated clearly under each employment but it’s a grave mistake to over-emphasis this part. More importantly, list your accomplishments. Your responsibility can be “Responsible for sales…..” but that essentially does not mean much. Try this: “Increased product sales by 40% within a two year period, captured 30 new accounts and ….”

Truth #5 Keywords

Due to the amount of applications received, recruiters may not have all the time to read every line of every resume. They usually scan through quickly and spot for keywords. Therefore, you need to know the keywords of your profession. For example, “full set of accounts” is considered an important set of keywords for the accounting profession. Recruiters that are looking for Accounts Executive when spotted these words in your resume will immediately single you out. You get the picture now?
